Graphic Design Is Like An Interview
By a Published: 07/14/2010
John wants to get his feet wet and land his first job as a graphic designer. He has recently graduated from a prestigous college and he knows all the graphic design programs. He is primed and ready to start a job in the real world and wants nothing more thank to proudly open his first pay check. He wants to make a good impression on his interview and land his first graphic design job.
As John drives to the company where he will be interviewed he is thinking how great it would to be hired for this job. Its only a half hour commute from his house and its the perfect job. Finally, the interview begins and the first question is asked, " So John, what makes you think you are a good fit for this postion ?" Well, I am creative, I am a hard worker and no one else can create graphic design art work like me. Ooops ! John's first and big mistake is that he comes across cocky and over confident and doesn't make a good first impression because he sounds unproffesional.
Mary is also applying for the same graphic designer's position as did John. She is also just out of college and seeking her first graphic design job. She is just excited as John was for his interview. Mary is thinking how great her career would be getting this job. The interview begins and Mary is asked, "So Mary, what makes you think you are a good fit for this position ?" She replies "Well, I am creative, I am a hard worker and would like to bring these assets to your company." The rest of Mary's interview went nearly flawlessly and the interviewers were impressed with her. Mary received her first graphic design job and John did not. Needless to say, Mary made a good first impression.
Graphic design is alot like an interview, especially corporate identity such as business cards and logos. An unproffesional looking business card or logo makes a bad first impression. It's like telling the person who sees it that this is the type of work I am capable of doing... Unprofessional. A stellar, creative and professional looking business card and logo says, "Hey this is a professional and creative looking business card and if you hire me you can receive the same quality work."
