Lawrence Taylor, the former New York Giants linebacker who is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was arrested by Ramapo, N.Y., police for an alleged rape, according to multiple reports.
Taylor was taken into custody by police at a Holiday Inn hotel and was being held pending arraignment Thursday afternoon, the Journal News of New York's Lower Hudson Valley reported.
The Journal News reported that Taylor is being charged with third-degree rape, a charge involving intercourse with a minor.
According to the newspaper, the alleged victim in the case is a 15-year-old girl who apparently is a runaway from New York City. The girl was treated at a hospital following the incident, according to the Journal News.
"She was a runaway since March and there was a pimp involved," Christopher P. St. Lawrence, the supervisor of the town of Ramapo, told the Journal News. "She got punched in the face. We're not sure who did it."
An uncle of the girl contacted New York City police, according to the Journal News.
Taylor, 51, played for the Giants between the 1981 and 1993 seasons. He was selected to 10 Pro Bowls and was named the NFL's defensive player of the year in the 1981, '82 and '86 seasons. Taylor was named to the NFL's 75th anniversary team in 1994 and was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1999.
Police are scheduled to conduct a news conference Thursday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
The Associated Press reported that police did not immediately respond to questions by the AP about the circumstances surrounding the arrest and whether Taylor was represented by an attorney.
Taylor has had legal problems in the past, including multiple arrests on drug-related charges. But he reportedly has said his drug problems are behind him.
Taylor competed last year in ABC's televised dancing competition, "Dancing with the Stars
